Key takeaways

  • Marketing Cloud Engagement is Salesforce’s long-established platform for large-scale, multi-channel B2C messaging.
  • Account Engagement, formerly Pardot, is built for B2B lead nurturing and handoff to sales.
  • Marketing Cloud Next, generally available since June 2025, is built on the core Salesforce platform and Data Cloud, with agentic AI features.
  • Choose based on audience (B2B or B2C), volume, data and how closely marketing must work inside Salesforce.

“Marketing Cloud” is a brand that covers several distinct products. Buyers are often confused about which one they need, and it matters: they differ in architecture, skills required and price. Here is a plain-English guide.

Marketing Cloud Engagement

Marketing Cloud Engagement is the platform many people mean by “Marketing Cloud”. It is designed for high-volume consumer marketing across email, SMS and mobile push, with tools such as Journey Builder for multi-step journeys, Email Studio, Mobile Studio and Contact Builder for data. It runs on its own infrastructure connected to Salesforce through Marketing Cloud Connect, and typically needs specialist skills, including SQL for segmentation and AMPscript for personalization.

Account Engagement (formerly Pardot)

Account Engagement is Salesforce’s B2B marketing automation product. It focuses on capturing leads, nurturing them with Engagement Studio, scoring and grading prospects, and passing qualified leads to sales in Salesforce. It is more approachable for small marketing teams and closely tied to the sales process.

Marketing Cloud Next

Salesforce announced Marketing Cloud Next as generally available in June 2025. It is built natively on the core Salesforce platform and Data Cloud, combining capabilities from the earlier Marketing Cloud Growth and Advanced editions with agentic AI features such as AI-assisted campaign creation, segment intelligence and personalization decisioning. Because it runs on the same platform as Sales and Service Cloud, marketing data, consent and automation sit alongside the rest of your Salesforce data.

How to choose

  • B2B with a sales team and modest volumes: Account Engagement, or Marketing Cloud Next if you want marketing native to your Salesforce org.
  • High-volume B2C with complex channels: Marketing Cloud Engagement remains a proven choice.
  • Starting fresh and committed to Salesforce’s data and AI direction: evaluate Marketing Cloud Next.
  • Already invested in one product: weigh migration effort carefully against new capabilities; Salesforce offers upgrade paths for existing customers.

What every implementation needs

  1. Clean, unified customer data and clear consent management.
  2. Authenticated sending domains and good deliverability practices.
  3. A content and journey plan tied to business outcomes.
  4. Reporting that connects campaigns to pipeline or revenue.

Salesforce frequently renames and repackages products. Confirm current editions, features and pricing with Salesforce before deciding.
